Home is not just a place, it's the feeling that connects families, friends, and relatives. Buying a home is the keystone of wealth that helps you strengthen financially and emotionally touch your hearts—all wishes for a healthy, clean and stable life, whether the home is big or small. Yet, how many home buyers are conscious of a new home being waterproofed? It's just not certain.

Waterproofing has become one of the fundamental requirements in constructing buildings, whether residential, commercial, or industrial. It is done to safeguard the home from moisture intrusion, mold and mildew growth, and the concrete structure's deterioration. Though many waterproofing materials and methods are widely followed, the right one is chosen based on individualistic needs.

The epoxy resin is one of the waterproofing and sealing agents obtained when the epoxide polymer is mixed with the hardening substance. This resin makes a protective layer over the applied surface, making it waterproof and non-corrosive. It is a versatile material and has been greatly used by homeowners, building engineers, and contractors for repair work, maintenance, and construction projects.

What makes Epoxy resin the best waterproofing material?

  • Selecting the appropriate Epoxy resin type for the particular purpose.
  • Check for the quality of the base material or the substrate to avoid cracks.
  • Note down the minimum curing time for different Epoxy materials.
  • Choose the right film thickness according to its use.
  • For good adhesion, make sure to clean and dry the surface completely.

How long will the Epoxy waterproofing material last?

Epoxy waterproofing material is hard, have high impact strength, and abrasive resistant. It lasts for almost 30 years for residential settings whereas, for industrial and commercial settings, it lasts between 5-10 years due to the high traffic of vehicles and foot on the epoxy flooring.

Suitable Surfaces for the Application of Epoxy Waterproofing:

Although any surface can be covered with epoxy material, the initial preparation is needed for porous surfaces. The surfaces that you can directly apply a coat of Epoxy resin includes,

  • Porcelain
  • Ceramic
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Tile
  • Laminate
  • Formica and
  • MDF board ( Medium-density fiberboard )

In porous surfaces like plywood, butcher block, live edge, and Concrete, a skim coat of Epoxy resin is done to seal the surface, preventing any air bubbles or moisture from entering the surface. Usually, 1-2 skim coats are done with the drying time of 6 hours between each coat. The final epoxy floor coating is done after a light sanding to ensure that the Epoxy will properly adhere to the surface. The surfaces that cannot be covered with the Epoxy waterproofing material are copper and silicone.

Epoxy forms :

Epoxy resins are used on the concrete surface in adhesives, paints, bonding agents, epoxy mortars, penetrating sealers, paints, coatings, grouts, repair materials, and admixtures to make Epoxy polymer-modified Concrete.

Facilities that mostly benefit from waterproof Epoxy flooring and coatings are, Food industry, commercial and institutional kitchens, chemical manufacturing plants, industries, public locker rooms and restrooms, communal showers, fast food restaurants, shopping malls, sports arena, Hotel spa, Pool decks, etc.,

How to waterproof the swimming pool using Epoxy waterproofing material :

Epoxy - cement systems are used to waterproof the swimming pools, which creates a solid resistance layer that preserves the pool from the Groundwater and water inside the pool itself. The swimming pool water uses aggressive chemicals like chlorine and other atmospheric agents that compromise the structure's stability. To overcome this, Proper application of an epoxy cement waterproofing system has to be followed.

  1. First, prepare the substrate, free from dust, dirt, oil, and other debris.
  2. Apply the cement mortar to the pool's walls and the bottom to give a smooth and stable substrate for the epoxy coating. The cement mortar can be made waterproof using 1% of waterproofing admixture like ADINOL-DM to the cement weight.
  3. After 28 days of curing time, the cement mortar hardens and ready to apply a primer DUROFLOOR-BI.
  4. Then, the cracks and the imperfections are filled with the EPOMAX - EK epoxy putty.
  5. Once the primer dries, within 24 hours, the swimming pool has to be painted with the epoxy coating of EPOXY COAT - S waterproofing.

The waterproofing layer should be long-lasting, bonding well, and gives a smooth finished surface for its use. The epoxy coating should possess the properties like highly elastomeric and resistance to water, chemicals, weather effects like UV radiations, frost, etc., so, by employing epoxy waterproofing for the right purpose, the homeowners will have long term comfort and peace of mind.
