Types of waterproofing for your home and buildings

We are professional waterproofing contractors in Pune, Mumbai, Banglore, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi And Ernakulam. We often wonder why people hesitate to spend money and time waterproofing the home. So in this blog, I want to explain the benefits of waterproofing the valuable property, your dream home with all its necessary types and materials used. The water seepage in homes is unavoidable and leads to immediate effects like the dampness/puffiness on the walls, peeling of paint, and the growth of molds. According to the reports, Waterproofing costs nearly 1% of home buying cost, but if ignored, it is responsible for almost 90% of the Repair cost. Waterproofing involves providing the physical barrier of waterproof material between the floor and walls or between the roof and walls, to prevent the penetration of water and the moisture build-up to the structure of the home. Waterproofing not only increases the property value but reduces maintenance costs, prevents mold and mildew, provides a healthy environment, and reduces energy costs. It can be done at the time of Construction when there are any visible cracks on the roof/ Terrace, Old or damaged plastered walls, or before repainting the home.

The areas of application are:

  1. All the exterior Horizontal and Vertical surfaces of the home, which is more susceptible to water intrusion.

  2. Building roofs/terraces / Podium, Parapet, Sunshades, etc., as it is always open for monsoons and other seepages.

  3. Basement of the building, as it is close to the earth's surface.

  4. Kitchen, Bathrooms, and Toilets, as it is the critical location where water is continuously utilized.

  5. Balcony Areas, as the water sweeps right inside during the rainy/snowy season.

  6. Swimming pools and Water Tanks, as any leakage causes significant damage to the surrounding structures.

The different Waterproofing Methods are,

1.) Cementitious Waterproofing: It is one of the easiest, cheapest, and effective methods of waterproofing concrete structures with cement-based coatings. It can be either rigid, or semi-flexible which are Crystalline or Polymer-Modified Cementitious Waterproofing systems and they are easy to apply, Seamless, Weather Resistant, and good at bonding old and new concretes. The cementitious Waterproofing is suited for water storage tanks, Water treatment facilities, Dams and Tunnels, swimming pools, Basement and exterior walls of buildings, Elevator pits, Parking structures, Subway and Railway systems, Cargo ports and docks, Pumping stations, etc.,

2) Liquid Waterproofing membrane: It is simple and ready to use Liquid-based coating, forming a rubber-like elastomeric waterproofing membrane and protecting the building structures like the roofs ( flat, pitched, or domed ), terraces, and balconies from water stagnation and infiltration. You can use a Sprayer Gun or the Airless Sprayer which saves time, allows full coverage, and Rapid curing even during the winter season. The coating can be applied over most of the roofing materials like asphalt, bitumen, felt, and concrete. It gives 25 years of durability and 70% less expensive than the roof replacement in refurbished conditions.

3) Bituminous / Asphalt coated Waterproofing: This method is the flexible coating of Bitumen ( Asphalt or coal-tar ) which is a black, sticky substance that is ideal for the concrete foundations. It is an excellent waterproofing and protective coating agent that is used in roofs, basement, below ground structures, bridges, etc., Though it's inexpensive, easy to apply, higher resistance to mechanical damages, and covers complex surfaces, it has limited life due to solvent evaporation when exposed to extreme sunlight.

4) Bituminous Membrane Waterproofing: This method has two types, namely torch-on membrane, and self-adhesive membrane, and famous for waterproofing the low sloped roofs to seal any cracks. It is made of Bitumen waterproof materials that have an elongation of 150% and a thickness of 2-4mm. 5) Brick Bat Coba Waterproofing: It is one of the oldest methods of Waterproofing where the brickbats of thickness 110 mm, are placed over the fresh mortar that provides thermal comfort on flat RCC roofs to prevent the leakage of water.

6) Injected Grouting: In this method, a low viscous resin is injected through the short to medium infiltration areas like cracks, voids, or the Honeycombs. This waterproofing application is used in bricks, concrete, and other structures like basement and tunnels.

7) Polyurethane Waterproofing: This method of Waterproofing is easy to install and provides long term durability and a higher level of flexibility. It is made of Polyurethane with two components, Polyol, a base, and isocyanide, a reactor. It is used for roof decks that get exposed to outside weather conditions and You need to be careful while adopting this method, as Polyurethane is sensitive to moisture in the concrete slabs.

8) Silicone Polymers waterproofing: This method is one of the advanced techniques, where it applies the durable four coating silicone polymers liquid ( Water-seal PSV ) using a sprayer gun to form a crack-free membrane. It is commonly used in plumbing pipes, ships, aquariums, Terrace, Bathrooms, Roof slopes, Exterior Basement walls, Cement-Metal sheds, etc.,

EPDM Rubber and thermoplastic are also the most robust waterproof materials available in the market. So, selecting the excellent quality Waterproofing membranes that last for more than ten years is pivotal for your individualistic needs. I hope you understood now; it's worth the time and cost spent on Waterproofing your dream home.
